“Confirmed Cases” pulled from CDC data table “Cumulative total number of COVID-19 cases in the United States by report date, January 12, 2020, to March 26, 2020, at 4pm ET (n=85,356)”.

“Infected Cases Showing Symptoms” pulled from CDC data table COVID-19 cases in the United States by date of illness onset, January 12, 2020, to March 26, 2020, at 4pm ET (n=17,849)” and cumulatively added numbers together for daily figures.

“Reported Cases Left Untested Not by Fault of Patient (Conservative Estimate)” pulled data from “Confirmed Cases” for a given date and subtracted it from data pulled from “Infected Cases Showing Symptoms” for a given date 10 days before that of the “Confirmed Cases” data. This takes into account the fact that individuals with symptoms do not always immediately report them to medical authorities, conservatively assuming that no individual reported symptoms until 10 days after their onset, based on the CDC’s caveat that “Illnesses that began during this time [a ten-day window] may not yet be reported”. As a result of this conservative estimate, figures may be lower than the reality, but data trends are likely similar to the reality.

“All Symptomatic Cases Left Untested” pulled data from “Confirmed Cases” and subtracted it from data pulled from “Infected Cases Showing Symptoms”.

“Probable Total Cases” pulled data from “Infected Cases Showing Symptoms” and applied the function x=y+[0.1(z-y)], where x = the probable total cases for a given date rounded to the nearest whole number, y = data from “Infected Cases Showing Symptoms” for a given date 5 days after that of x, and z = data from “Infected Cases Showing Symptoms” for a given date 6 days after that of x. This takes into account the 5.1 day mean incubation period for the coronavirus calculated by Johns Hopkins University.
